When a 4th Grade student started to choke on a chicken bone her friends programmed Roamer to make a dramatic life-saving dash to the hospital.  Teacher and Roamer enthusiast Michael Raby set this and other problems for his students to solve in a wonderfully playful lesson. (more…)

My Personal Tribute to Seymour Papert

Father of Educational Robotics Dies

Sadly, on the 31st July, Seymour Papert died.  I find moments like this strange.  While it’s to time grieve, it’s also time to remember and since memories of Papert remind me of good things, I also experience a tinge of happiness. I would like to share my reflections.   I hope this isn’t too self-indulgent, but key parts of my life led me to work with  educational robots and they empathise with some of the experiences of this great educator. Oxon Hill Middle School Make Roamer a Star

I have visited schools all over the world.  From the poverty of South African Township schools to the richness of Newport Beach schools in California.  I have worked with teachers overwhelmed and struggling to make progress and high achieving institutes in Shanghai and Singapore.  Now and then I came across a school worthy of special mention.  Oxon Hill Middle School is such a place.

Valiant Technology started working with educational robots in 1983. In those days people used Logo to program Turtles. Now you can use Roamer ScratchX to program Roamer. In this article I explain how it makes an ideal partnership.
